Executive Directors
Nick is a co-founder of Ludgate and as chief executive has joint responsibility for the day-to-day management, fund raising and strategy. Nick has extensive investment experience in the cleantech sector. He has advised and raised equity and debt finance for a wide range of small companies both quoted and unquoted. Prior to establishing Ludgate, Nick spent eight years working within the commercial and investment banking divisions of Barclays Capital (formerly BZW) focused on project and corporate finance.
Gijs became an executive director of Ludgate Investments Limited in 2011 and has joint responsibility for the day-to-day management, fund raising and strategy.
In 2007 Ocean Capital, a Netherlands based investment company that is owned and managed by Gijs and his brother Jeroen, acquired a significant minority stake in both Ludgate Investments and the Ludgate Environmental Fund.
In 2009 Gijs moved to the United Kingdom to become more actively involved. He joined the Ludgate Investments board in 2010 as a non-executive director, shortly after Ocean Capital acquired a majority stake through a management buy-out.
Prior to Ludgate Gijs worked in India for three years where he was a founding and managing partner of an investment fund focused on the real estate sector in India.
Charles joined Ludgate in 2004 as finance director and head of corporate finance. He is currently responsible for all of Ludgate's financial administration and also supports the investment team in a variety of ways. He qualified as a chartered accountant with Touche Ross in 1974. He later became a partner in Grieveson Grant and a director of Kleinwort Benson Securities Ltd, where he advised a wide range of public companies on flotations, acquisitions, disposals, placings and the general requirements of being listed on the London Stock Exchange. He is a non-executive director of Hightex Group plc.
Investment Advisers
Bill is the Chief Investment Officer, having joined Ludgate in 2008, with overall responsibility for identifying, executing and managing the portfolio of investments of the Ludgate Environmental Fund. Bill graduated with honours from the University of Pennsylvania's intensive Management & Technology programme, with degrees from both Wharton and the School of Engineering. He then joined Environmental Resources Management as a consultant, gaining exposure to the environmental impacts across a wide variety of sectors. Following various operational experiences, including helping to turn around a start up in the metals sector, Bill completed an MBA at INSEAD.
Prior to joining Ludgate, Bill was responsible for analysing companies, new technologies and markets as the General Manager of Strategy and Portfolio for Royal Dutch Shell in their Renewables and CO2 division and then latterly, has gained experience in cleantech venture investing when working with Vantage Point Venture Partners. Bill has board seats or observer status on a number of companies in the portfolio of the Fund.
Nick Curtis joined Ludgate in 2009. He has responsibility for execution and portfolio monitoring. After graduating from Bristol University with a degree in Geography, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant at Price Waterhouse in 1987. He then worked in M&A at Kleinwort Benson & PaineWebber before joining Enron as Director, Corporate Development. He moved to BG, and its successor companies Lattice and National Grid. Latterly he was Head of European Risk at GE Energy Financial Services. Nick has board seats or observer status on a number of companies in the portfolio of the Fund.
Matthew joined Ludgate in 2011. Prior to Ludgate Matthew worked for Oxara Energy Group, a firm specialising in private equity investments in renewable energy generating projects and companies in Europe. Before Oxara he worked for Accenture. Matthew has a first class degree in Mathematics from Oxford University.
Non-Executive Directors
Jeroen became the chairman of Ludgate Investments Limited in 2010 after Ocean Capital, a Netherlands based Investment Company owned and managed by Jeroen and his brother Gijs, acquired a majority stake through a management buy-out. Ocean Capital first acquired a significant minority stake in both Ludgate Investments and the Ludgate Environmental Fund in 2007.
Jeroen and Gijs have shared interests in the oil and energy sector through a minority shareholding in the Netherlands based North Sea Group, of which Jeroen was an executive director for four years. They also manage and hold majority interests in an investment fund focused on the real estate sector in India.
He is also the owner of the Netherlands based Voskamp Group which is active in the wholesale of professional construction materials.
Trevor has accumulated considerable City experience through a forty-year career, which includes managing a broad range of activities in the financial services industry. As a partner in stockbroker Grenfell & Colegrave and as managing director and CEO of the stockbroking and investment management activities of international and UK based banks and financial institutions, he has been both a business and investment manager. Trevor joined the board of Ludgate Investments following his retirement as a director of Brown Shipley & Co. Ltd., where he was head of stockbroking and investment management. Trevor is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment.
